Introvert Whisperer / 10 Ways To Be a Bad Manager and Leader - Introvert Whisperer 10 Ways To Be a Bad Manager and Leader If you’re a manager, you probably want to spend some time figuring out if you are guilty of doing any of the following things that make you a bad manager.  Keep in mind, it only takes one of these things and if you are guilty of several, you probably have turnover â€" big time. 1-Use your employees as a shield â€" In order to look good to the higher level, it’s a nice touch to point the finger at an employee.  To ensure you look even better, maybe you fire that person to demonstrate just how serious you are in your blaming. 2-Hover like a helicopter â€" Because you don’t trust your employee or don’t know how to spend your day, you hover over your employees watching them work.  It comforts you and totally disrupts the employee. 3-Feed your ego â€"  You probably work hard to ensure everyone knows you’re in charge.  As you puff out your chest, you can be sure that alone will garner snickers behind your back.  You’re still the same person only more repulsive. 4-Tells employees how to do their job â€"  Nothing is more inspiring than to treat people like they know nothing and you know it all, even if you do. 5-Poor communication â€" If you aren’t setting expectations, direction and giving feedback continuously, you need a department of psychics.  No one can read your mind. 6- Yells â€" If you ever want someone to really hear and understand you, don’t yell. 7-Clueless â€" Sometimes situations at work dictate that you take over a group/function you know absolutely nothing about.  You can’t hide nor can you pretend your way around this fact although bad managers do all the time.  You need to train and learn if you are ever really going to lead this group.  It’s not a sign of weakness. 8- Can’t or won’t define a strategy or direction â€" Guess what?  Leaders, lead.  That means they have a direction or strategy to accomplish. 9- No management training â€" Managing is not the same job as “doing”.  If you haven’t had any training or done much reading on the subject, chances are high you aren’t doing a good job at managing. 10- No employee growth or nurturing â€" Employees are like plant-life. If they are kept in the dark, not given room to learn and grow or given the respect, they will leave or die-at-their-desk. It can influence not only what colleges you get accepted to, but also the availability and amount of scholarship funds, and is therefore not to be underestimated. If you weren’t the best student in high school, and thus don’t have the best grades, doing well on the ACT represents an opportunity to partially make up for less than stellar academic performance in high school. So, it can really be viewed as an exciting opportunity, instead of a stressful requirement. With that in mind, here are 5 strategies you can apply to get the best score possible. Strategies 1 and 2: Before the Test Study Comprehensively Though it can seem overwhelming at times, the ACT represents a fixed target, which anyone can hit with sufficient preparation. It is not an IQ test. It tests knowledge and skills developed in high school and which are needed for college, and which, most importantly, can be learned. Well before you plan to take the test, buy one of the many comprehensive ACT study guides on the market, like the Real ACT Prep Guide, and read all of it, doing the practice problems along the way. This may seem like a lot of work, but if you do the heavy lifting on the front end, taking the test will seem easy by comparison, and you will be able to max out your score. Take Practice Tests The best way to both predict and improve your performance on the ACT is by taking practice tests under the same conditions as the actual test. Give yourself a time limit, and don't allow any references or distractions. Research suggests that, like the old adage, practice is what gets people closes to perfect. It turns out that even purported geniuses in their particular field, like Mozart or Michael Jordan, actually practiced much, much more than those around them at their craft. The more times you do this the better, but four is a decent minimum. Since the passages are fairly long, it is helpful to quickly read the questions first, so that you will be primed to spot the answers as you are reading. This will save you the time of having to reread or refer back to the passage in order to answer. Keep Your Stress Down Do whatever you need to both take care of yourself and ensure that you are well prepared. Stress inhibits performance, so you want to avoid it as much as possible. Great pexels.com Some of the more ridiculous, tragic deaths include people falling from mountains, falling into rivers, crashing airplanes (in other words, putting more than just their own lives at stake for the “perfect” selfie) and getting hit by trains. In fact, in more recent news, people have also accidentally shot themselves while taking a selfie with a gun. Again, not joking. So of course, such stupidity warrants expert help, which is why a group of computer experts have analyzed these “deaths-by-selfie” and attempted to create a solution. It’s no surprise that the solution is yet another application for users to install on their phones. The app in question would warn individuals that they are in a “death-by-selfie” zone. I can’t stress how much I wish I was making this up. And to make matters worse, this is an international problem. According to Hemank Lamba, from Carnegie Mellon University and Ponnurangam Kumaraguru from the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology and their colleagues, “We found that most common reason of selfie death was height-related. These involved people falling off buildings or mountains while trying to take dangerous selfies.” They wrote these findings in their report, which they published online at arXiv. What were other reasons for selfie-related deaths? The number two cause was a tie between drowning and being hit by a train. For any of you that commute and pass over train tracks at some point, this probably isn’t much of a surprise, as many individuals stop directly on the tracks in bumper to bumper traffic (in a personal experience, the woman behind me did so while talking on her phone. Luckily for her, no train was coming). Not sure if it’s an obliviousness or an “it can’t happen to me” mentality, but this problem is universal, and it’s a problem. According to Kumaraguru, these deaths were becoming a news report trend, and he and his colleagues wanted to do something about it. He attempted to use data mining in order to come up with his solution. According to him, “It is important because people are losing their lives because of taking dangerous selfies.” So what constitutes a “dangerous selfie”? How about a few examples? For one, there’s the German tourist who was killed in Peru. He attempted to catch himself on top of Macchu Picchu back in July and failed. There’s also five women from India who were taking a selfie in India. One of them died in September when she fell into the reservoir below. The other four died shortly after in their attempts to save her. There’s also the man in Washington, here in the U.S., who was taking selfies with his gun. He pulled the trigger, apparently thinking that it wasn’t loaded, and shot himself. And finally, there’s the man in Colorado that died taking a selfie while flying a plane, killing the other passenger in the plane along with him. I think Kumaraguru sums it up correctly in saying, “These are very disturbing.” So how many selfie deaths have there been? According to Kumaraguru and his team after collating media reports around the world, there have been about 127 reported selfie-related deaths between 2014 and September of this year. So he’s been working tirelessly to help fix the problem. According to him, he and the team have been attempting to develop a software that would warn users about their surroundings. Basically, if the user is in a dangerous area, the app would warn them, or it would turn off their camera in risky areas. According to him, “It could help users make better decisions.” The thought is there, the effort is there, but the probability that these “risk-takers” would download such an app is unlikely. Basically, if people are going to take selfies atop mountains, an app isn’t going to stop them from doing so. Or, more simply, they aren’t looking to be censored in their selfie taking, so they won’t ever download the app. However, the team is hopeful and continues to work for this solution. They are researching the areas where selfie deaths have actually occurred as well as areas where there’s potential for selfie-related deaths and they’re creating algorithms for the risk to selfie-takers. According to them, “We believe that the study can inspire and provide footprints for technologies which can stop users from clicking dangerous selfies, and thus preventing more of such casualties.” Whether or not it works, we’ll have to wait and see.
